GARDEN OF ROSES: Denis Gagnon Interprets Alice
Exhibition from June 10th to 19th 2011

Welcome to the point where art, fashion and beauty intersect. Stumble into the world of wearable fantasy from the mind of Canadian fashion designer Denis Gagnon, in response to both Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Lancôme's iconic rose.

Hurry up - tomorrow is the last chance to see the dress!

Some stories are retold, over and over again, gaining a life of their own through adaptation and interpretation -  Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is one of these stories. Originally written in 1865 by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Caroll and published with illustrations by John Tenniel, the story has been spun and re-spun by artists of all sorts for nearly 150 years. Through every version it has continued to capture the childlike imaginations of the young and old alike.

This high-fashion artwork is characteristic of Gagnon's signature style that boldly employs metal fringes and exposed zippers to create airy, sculptural works. The result: a very modern, confident Alice. The dress is the centerpiece of an environment inspired by modern cinematic interpretations of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, creating yet another link in the chain of retelling and reinterpreting the classic story.

GARDEN OF ROSES: DENIS GAGNON INTERPRETS ALICE

By Eva Fydrych

Inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, one of Canada's iconic fashion designers creates a world of wearable fantasy.

One of the most acclaimed Canadian designers of his generation, Denis Gagnon is noted for his bold traversal of the boundaries between the fashion industry and art. For over a decade, his concept of clothing as "moving sculpture" has informed his innovative collections for fashion lovers across Canada while also finding expression in the realms of pure creativity. As a result, Gagnon, who began his career designing theatrical costumes, recently became the first Canadian in his field to have his work exhibited at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

In this installation, a one-of-a-kind dress surrounded by a garden of roses provides an intriguing complement to Christopher Wheeldon's ballet performed by the National Ballet of Canada.

Commissioned by Luminato and Lancôme.
