FASHION EVENTS - JOHANNESBURG

South African Fashion Week 
Spring/Summer 2015

JOHANNESBURG - The latest edition of SA Fashion Week (#SAFW) took place from 18 to 21 March at the Crowne Plaza hotel. Several South African designers presented their Spring/Summer 2015 collections.

Our favourite shows included: Clive Rundle, Afrikan Swiss, Black Coffee, Colleen Eitzen, Bodhisattva, Fundudzi and Be Seen, and Ephymol.


ABOUT SA FASHION WEEK 

South African Fashion Week (SAFW) is committed to the development of the South African fashion industry and has established its position as educators and mentors in the industry, since 1997.

The vision of SAFW is to nurture an appreciation for South African fashion among consumers and to direct designers and the industry at large with a single-minded focus on The Business of Fashion – which can connect our industry to both local and international consumers. SA Fashion Week assists fashion designers with business networking, skill development, market research and critical fashion industry know-how. It nurtures the craft and vision of each designer, but also creates a significant marketing platform that allows designers to become successful business people with a profitable brand. 

With an unwavering commitment to make a meaningful contribution to the growing fashion design industry and the country’s economy, SAFW is well-placed to offer the global fashion community a uniquely South African fashion experience. The continuing mission is to help and support successful local brands bridge the gap between retailers, clothing manufacturers and textile manufacturers to engender a distinctive South African fashion culture. SA Fashion Week holds Seasonal Collections twice a year, Annual/Bi-Annual Designer Pop Up Shop(s), as well as reputable competition platforms to build and nurture emerging and established designers throughout the year.

Clive Rundle

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Born in Zimbabwe, Clive Rundle grew up in South Africa where he studied fashion design in Johannesburg. Clive Rundle goes by as a constructionist rather than a fashion designer, with an intricate structure being the essence of his design. The inherent structuring of his patterns can lead the translation in any direction – frugal, avant-garde, classical, elaborate and contemporary. After a 3 month intensive programme in Antwerp in 2013, under the umbrella of Anne Chapelle BVBA 32, Clive created a diffusion label Clive by Clive Rundle, currently available in 7 stores nationally.

Inspiration:

A Zen approach to juxtaposing shapes and colours in blocks. Contemplation on an ancient creation that still apply now, comparable to a Japanese garden.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Known for his unsurpassable architectural flair; Jacques van der Watt of Black Coffee has carved his own path on the runway since starting in 1998. With every collection there is always a great sense of loyalty to local traditionalism but with the approach of modernist fundamentalism - a place where construction is king and attention to detail subtly blends into beauty and innovation. It is with this unique voice that van der Watt continues to cement his place as one of Africa’s design greats. Black Coffee received the coveted Mercedes Benz Art Award in 2009.


SS 2015 Collection:

FUSION is a study in the confluence of African and Asian design. Parallels drawn from these different cultures fuse to form a universal language. This marriage of two aesthetics narrates a purposeful tale. Fusion celebrates the point where texture, pattern and proportion of two continents meet with a nod to seventies runway glamour.

Clean graphic lines, simplicity of form and silhouette, bold geometry and complex linear patterning define this collection.

This is the second season of collaboration with crafters from Ekurhuleni. Garment adornment and accessories are produced in workshops at BlackCoffee’s studio in Johannesburg. Techniques include intricate wire work, woven ribbon work following complex geometries, delicate hand printing, and repetitive button detailing all under the creative direction and mentorship of designer Jacques van der Watt.

FUSION was revealed at SA Fashion Week on 18 March 2015. Selected items are available now in stores.

Colleen Eitzen

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Colleen Eitzen has always had a penchant for drawing and a love for rich colours and fabrics and in her adult life has applied this to all her designs. She has a fully customer centric approach and strives to inspire and thrill the greatest star of the show: the customer.

Bodhisattva

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Bodhisattva is an ethical fashion label poised to change the way we think about fashion, focussing on Conscious Responsible Luxury. The Managing Director and creative force behind Bodhisattva is Yumnaa Firfirey, a social entrepreneur and economic development practitioner based in Cape Town. She founded Bodhisattva to explore and illustrate how fashion can bring about socio-economic change.

Fundudzi and Be Seen

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Clothing with a conscience in the mantra behind Fundudzi by Craig Jacobs. Founded by media personality and fashion entrepreneur Craig Jacobs, the label provides a capsule wardrobe for free spirited individuals, seeking pieces with a distinctive signature, which subtly draws inspiration from the people and places, unsoiled by the noise of modern life. The brand also supports initiatives, including the local crafting industry, up-cycling and organisations like Cheezekids of Humanity. 

Fundudzi is available in selected boutiques nationwide and is also a part of the Edgars X Designer Capsule in Edgars stores in Melrose Arch and Sandton City


Inspiration:

In African tradition, a blanket is not simply something to keep the cold at bay. Passed on from generation to generation, it instils a sense of pride in the past, interwoven with the oral histories of those who have come before. For the Basotho, certain styles are given special names, such as Sutha ke fete (Give Way that I May Pass), Slea o butsoe (Leave The Door Open) or Se Secha (The New One). Drawing inspiration from the traditions of wrapping, patchwork, motifs and colours. The Collection features Fundudzi’s trademark African Cashmere(TM) knits, in a range of serene hues, punctuated with a flourish of colour.
