STREET FASHION - INDIA

"Fashion should make you stand out, not disappear in a crowd." - Manish Arora (Indian Fashion Designer)

Woman's clothing in India is closely related to local culture and religion, and it varies depending on the region. Traditional Sari - a long strip of unstitched cloth with patterns, ranging from four to nine metres in length that is draped over the body in various styles  is still the most popular women's outfit.

Sari is made of silk and is worn by young ladies and woman, both in small villages and in metropolis like Deli or Mumbai. Vibrant colours and lots of ornaments are probably the most characteristic features of Indian traditional wear.

Indian women like to accessorise their outfits with bangles, anklets, ear and nose rings, and in some parts of India (mainly South) with flower garlands called Gajra. Western fashion is slowly becoming more and popular, especially among teenage girls or as a comfortable dressing option to work.

Below is a small sample of Indian Street Fashion captured by Alexandre Bento Freire in Bangalore, Hampi, Jodhpur, Kolkata, Konark, Puri, and Udajpur.
