Judges faced tough decisions as fashion design talents presented original creations that showcased outstanding technical skills

12 May 2014, Singapore – The winners of regional fashion design competition, Audi Star Creation 2014 have been crowned after an intensive day of judging and an exciting runway showdown held at Tent@Orchard. The three winners – Rebecca Corrine Lam (25, Hong Kong); Zhou Jun (24, China); and Newman Han (29, South Korea) – will take home S$10,000 each, a one-year internship with leading fashion retailer F J Benjamin, and the opportunity to launch their maiden capsule collection next year.

ZHI – which means "paper" in Chinese – was the name and inspiration of Rebecca’s winning collection. The collection sought to use fabric as if it were paper, manipulating it by cutting, folding, painting, and burning.

"Rebecca's innovative collection demonstrated her deep understanding of this year's theme. Through the use of paper and its intimate relationship with the Asian culture, she presented a perfect balance of creativity and commercialism in her collection, and for that, deserved to be in the top three,” says Dick Lee, Audi Singapore Brand Ambassador and a judge at Audi Star Creation 2014.

The colour red, a traditional symbolic colour of happiness very popular in China, stood out in Zhou Jun’s Red Construction, which saw the use of unstructured silhouettes and experimental pattern draping.

Kenny Lim, Co-Founder and Director of Singapore fashion label DEPRESSION commented, “Zhou Jun’s interpretation of The Asian Perspective was minimalistic and relatable. His collection was so well made that the pieces looked ready for the racks anytime. His designs were effortless and there were hints of oriental elements there were not deliberate.”

The third winner of Audi Star Creation 2014 was Newman Han, who presented a collection entitled The Scientific Expedition. He sent models down the runway in outfits that encapsulated the themes of study and exploration.

“Newman has throughout this entire competition, displayed a professional finesse that embodies a matured sense of direction. This is evident in his collection’s design ethos. With an acclaimed platform like Audi Star Creation to provide exposure and experience, I have no doubt that Newman will continue to hone his skills at F J Benjamin,” says Odile Benjamin, Divisional CEO, Fashion Dynamics (Singapore) Pte. Ltd.

This year’s judging panel also included Mr David Wang, Chairman of the Designers & Retailers Group of Textile & Fashion Federation (Singapore) and Mr Colin McDowell, Creative Director of Audi Fashion Festival 2014.

The three winners were picked from a record 418 entries from 14 countries, with finalists from Singapore, Korea, Vietnam, Japan, China, Indonesia and Malaysia making the cut into the top 12.

A pre-judging session was held early this morning at Tent@Orchard where the 12 finalists, each accompanied by a model, presented their collection to the judging panel. The designs revolved around the concepts of religion, history, culture, flora and fauna, and even protective body armour, all embodying this year’s theme of ‘The Asian Perspective’.

The judging panel got up close to touch and feel the collections, and quizzed each finalist on several aspects of their works, such as price points and commercial viability. The works were brought to life during the competition showdown as models stormed the runway donning three outfits presented from each finalist, with Rebecca, Zhou Jun and Newman eventually emerging as this year’s winners.

One of the three winners will also stand a chance to win the Audi Young Designer Award, presented to the designer whose creation best embodies the Audi design spirit of innovation, technology and progression. The award winner will be announced on 13 May at the Audi Red Carpet Night gala dinner.

Organised by the Textile and Fashion Federation Singapore (TaFf) and supported by SPRING Singapore, Audi Star Creation aims to uncover new local and Asian talents and groom them into tomorrow’s fashion stars. The event, now into its fifth year, ultimately hopes to develop the long-term sustainability of the region’s fashion industry, by building capability and profiling local talents on an international platform, right here in Singapore.

The call for entries for Audi Star Creation 2015 will go out in November. The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2015.
