Out with the old, in with the new. As we step into 2017 with tentative yet hopeful hearts, most of us are probably inclined to purge the bad and the toxic from our lives. This can extend to our closets, which, as we know, is typically chock-full of old, unwanted, neglected clothes and more clutter than we can bear to look at.

And what with new spring pieces coming our way (have you seen the Spring/Summer 2017 designs on the runway?!), we are more eager to clear some wardrobe space. Hence, the closet purge.

This process can be overwhelming and stressful at times. But we’ve got some tips for you to get the job done and de-clutter your life. After all, new year, new you, right?

Here’s how to get through spring-cleaning your closet stress-free:

1. Prepare Your Playlist

Some background music goes a long way as you spring clean. It helps to keep your spirits high while you work your way through the million party dresses you’ve accumulated over the years.

If purging your closet makes you frazzled, go for music that calms you down. But if you need an energy boost to sort through boxes of crap, then turn up your favourite heart-pumping tracks and get cracking!

2. Purge Ruthlessly

Think of this as giving your closet a good cleanse. Dump all the contents of your wardrobe and drawers onto your bed. From this view, you will be able to realise at a glance just how much stuff you have. Ask yourself, “How long has it been since I wore this?” and “Will I ever wear this again?” Answer honestly! If you hesitating for more than five seconds, toss it.

That said, you get to keep anything that holds sentimental value or a timeless item that matches well with everything, such as a trusty old blazer that always makes you feel like a million dollars or a pair of ever-flattering jeans.

3. Categorise Your Clothes

For a more efficient way of sorting through all your stuff, organise everything into distinct categories of what to keep, donate, or throw. Singapore may bask in its tropical heat, but since layering works for every season and occasion, make sure to keep a few perennial necessities like a sweater or coat. This purge will let you see what you are lacking so you can shop with more direction come spring.

4. Abide by the One-Year Rule

If you haven’t worn it in a year, will you really wear it now? Be honest with yourself and stop hoarding your clothes— if it has been a year (or longer) and you can’t think of at least three ways to wear it, then it’s high time to let go. If it only looks good on the hanger but doesn’t hold you in all the right places, move on.

5. Get Organised

To optimise space, make use of slim hangers, organisation compartments (racks and boxes) you can easily get from IKEA— these will make your life much easier.
