LISBON, PORTUGAL - Spring/Summer 2019 edition of Lisboa Fashion Week took place from 11 - 14 October 2018 and featured collections from over 30 established and up-and-coming Portuguese designers. ModaLisboa Multiplex was a very strong edition, inspiring and thought-provoking, proving that Portuguese fashion is getting its own identity and is going in the right direction.

The collections shown on the catwalk were very innovative and versatile. While some designers sticked to classic colour palette and more traditional shapes, others were happy to experiment with oversized silhouettes and unconventional details.

What especially caught our attention this season was a wide range of stunning prints and patterns and bold colour combinations presented by designers such as Kolovrat, AWAYTOMARS, Gonçalo Peixoto, Ricardo Preto, Alexandra Moura, and three finalists of Sangue Novo contest: Opiar, Rita Carvalho, and Federico Protto.

Let's have a closer look at their designs!

Kolovrat

Kolovrat's SS19 collection, PASSAPORTE, transported us to another world, somewhere between dreams and reality. Vivid colours were mixed with neutral colour palette and strong geometric patterns were softened by beautiful abstract prints.

"Dreams, a space where the body breathes a raw freedom that dissolves in the blood and drains into daily life, the journey to an epicentre where the imagination flourishes and control disappears.

Passport is the shudder of this subconscious, a symbolic door of contagion between what is dreamed and what is real, an unpredictable vision in a society of functional mechanics." - Lidija Kolovrat

AWAYTOMARS

AWAYTOMARS surprised with darker colours and celestial prints, while still staying true to their youthful, funky vibe. The colours chosen for the summer collection were inspired by the early developments of synthetic aniline dyes, such as the deep purple colourant Mauveine created by British chemist William Henry Perkin in 1856.

"Light, the natural agent that stimulates sight and enables all things to become visible. We initially explored how light reflects and refracts off surfaces such as diamonds, which we translated into a line of cohesive digital prints. During the co-creation phase of our collection, the AWAYTOMARS collective suggested we look at the history of filmography and the ways imagery can be documented through light." - AWAYTOMARS

Gonçalo Peixoto

Any summer season wouldn't be complete without floralsGonçalo Peixoto gave that traditional summer look a bit of a twist and combined ultra-feminine floral dresses with casual jackets and raincoats, all in a very subtle pastel palette of pink, beige, and green. Some designs featured eye-catching stripes and metallic fabrics. The final effect is a modern and wearable collection which is perfect for summer in the city or a weekend getaway.

"Floating in the era of feminine liberalism, Gonçalo Peixoto’s Spring/Summer 2019 collection is formed from the conjectures and projections that the various forms of intra-feminine relationship present in contemporary times, absorbing not only a reality in national as well as international context.

With an edgy approach, deconstructed silhouettes appropriated by the nature of streetstyle, assume in its importance a challenge in revisiting and reinterpreting timeless classics." - Gonçalo Peixoto

Ricardo Preto

Ricardo Preto opted for bright, vivid colours and an eclectic mix of prints and patterns. Exploring our intimate relationship with fashion and taking inspiration from the movement of the body, the designer created a beautiful collection for a woman who is not afraid to express her emotions and is constantly searching for something new.

Unexpected colour combinations and bold, eye-catching prints made is one of the most interesting Spring/Summer 2019 collections shown at this edition of ModaLisboa. View more looks here.

"Clothing is the second skin that we choose for our selves and is entirely related to our state of mind.

Taking inspiration from the movement and the intimacy that each one of us has with our pieces of clothing, Ricar- do Preto presents you with a collection full of sophistica- ted and practical silhouettes for the contemporary women, asymmetrical cuts in fluid materials, unexpected color combinations in earth tones, blues, greens, reds and mixed prints." - Ricardo Preto

Alexandra Moura

Elegant check pattern never goes out of fashion, but it's time spice it up!

Alexandra Moura gave a classic checkered suit a contemporary upgrade and created a fresh, eclectic look by combining it with graphic T-Shirts and floral tops. What's not to love?

"With “Heirloom” the heritage of a childhood full of references is reinforced, of a girl from the city that spends her holidays on her grandmother’s house in the countryside - reinforcing the history of the designer and her childhood, evoking the holidays in Trás-os-Montes. The memories of floral paintings, reminiscing Impressionism, that would decorate the walls of the living room. Kitsh and elegant hand painted floral china mixed together; vases proudly filled with plastic and fabric flowers with vibrant colours; the mixture of carpets with the floral brocades of the sofa; the satin bed covers contrasting the frills and ties of the curtains, making the bedroom an intimate and holy division.

A mix between the past and present, the city and countryside, classical and traditional in opposition with the oversized garments with a sportswear feeling." - Alexandra Moura

Sangue Novo

Sangue Novo designers featured a couple of really inspiring looks in their collections as well. Our favourite prints were shown by Opiar, Rita Carvalho, and Federico Protto (all three designers are this year's Sangue Novo Finalists). Well done!

"One heritage, many lives. This is how MODALISBOA MULTIPLEX expresses its will and versatility, like one house that has many living rooms, communicating among each other for a cause only, the global and inclusive Fashion cause, that seeks to break with the prejudice and to create new inter-disciplinary production and communication networks." - ModaLisboa
