Let's uncover the history behind the star event in the Fashion Capital.

Paris is hailed as the birthplace of Haute Couture and the epicenter of fashion. The extravaganza of the runway and theatrical shows of Paris Fashion Week has existed here since the '70s. The Paris Fashion Week 2022 is about to roll out, and we are presenting some fascinating facts about this event.

When did the first fashion week take place?

The first fashion week took place in October of 1945 in New York City. This event was the brainchild of Eleanor Lambert, who wanted to draw attention to American designers after World War II. The Palace of Versailles hosted the first-ever fashion show as a fundraiser to gather money to pay for the estimated $60 million cost of refurbishing the royal palace. Fashion weeks have since been held worldwide and have become a staple in the fashion industry.

How did the idea of presenting designs on women come into action?

The origins of the runway show are unclear, but there is evidence that designer Charles Worth presented the first ever public fashion show in 1858. The event was held in Paris and featured a collection of Worth's designs. The audience was largely made up of other designers eager to see what Worth had created.

The idea of presenting designs on women caught on, and by the early 1900s, fashion shows were a common occurrence in Europe and the United States. Designers would bring their latest creations to these events, where they would be paraded in front of an audience of potential buyers and other interested parties.

What are the set rules of Haute Couture?

Haute Couture is a high-end fashion design created by individual designers for private clients. The term is French for "high sewing" or "high dressmaking." Unlike ready-to-wear fashion, which is created in mass quantities and sold off the rack, Haute Couture is made-to-order, usually taking several months to complete.

The Haute Couture industry is governed by a set of rules set forth by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, the regulating body of Haute Couture in Paris. To be considered a Haute Couture house, a design studio must meet certain criteria, including having a physical workshop in Paris, employing a team of at least 15 full-time workers, and presenting a collection of at least 35 original designs twice a year.

In addition to these set rules, Haute Couture houses often operate under a strict code of conduct. For example, they may require clients to schedule appointments weeks or even months in advance, and to purchase a minimum number of garments.

While the rules of Haute Couture may seem restrictive, they are in place to maintain the exclusivity and prestige of the industry. For many clients, the experience of working with a Haute Couture house is much about the process as it is about the final product.

In the End - What’s Going to Steal the Limelight this Paris Fashion Week?

Just like the previous fashion week, there is a higher chance that you might see a notable return and debut this season too. Again the formats will depend on how the health crisis developed and the actions taken by the government according to Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode. Whatever the situation may arise, the thriving fashionable crowd and celebs will surely bring something totally out of the box for you all to be excited about. Just wait and watch!
