ROME FASHION WEEK: BALESTRA
By Eva Fydrych
Born in Trieste, Renato Balestra comes from a family of architects and engineers and after a childhood stepped in the Mid-European cultural environment of the area, he too began studying for a degree in civil engineering. However, even from the earliest days of his youth he dedicated most of his time to artistic activities, including both painting and music, and devoted several hours per day to studying the piano. He is still a passionate connoisseur of both classical music and opera. It was not until the last year of his engineering studies, however, that he became involved in fashion, creating a design in response to a bet made among friends. Without his knowledge the result was sent to Milan and, to his great surprise, he was invited to participate in the creation of a haute couture collection. It is fair to say that fashion chose Renato Balestra, rather then Renato Balestra choosing fashion.

Without his knowledge the result was sent to Milan and, to his great surprise, he was invited to participate in the creation of a haute couture collection. It is fair to say that fashion chose Renato Balestra, rather then Renato Balestra choosing fashion. The move from Milan to Rome was rapid, and although still undecided on exactly what path to take, Renato Balestra was convinced that his future lay in fashion design. For a number of years, he designed for the theatre, the cinema, and naturally, the fashion world until the success of the first Renato Balestra label collections convinced him to choose the latter option. From Via Sistina where the Balestra shop had its headquarters, he began his rise to international fame, developing and creating a variety of activities.
Today, Renato Balestra designs and markets approximately thirty different ranges that include haute couture and ready-to-wear collections, a complete line of men's wear and a wide range of accessories. His private clients include prestigious clients from all over the world. Renato Balestra has designed clothes for the Empress Farah Diba, the Queen of Thailand, the first ladies of the Philippines and Egypt, Saudi Arabian Princesses and for leading celebrities of the international jet-set, not forgetting, of course, famous actresses. A lover of the active life, he is especially fond of travel. He feels that the best way to learn about life is to discover countries, cultures and people from all over the world, becoming acquainted with their ways of life, their philosophies, their customs and their religions.
Throughout his career, Renato Balestra has been invited to present his collections all over the world, with enormous international success. He has also been awarded prestigious prizes in recognition of his talent. Website: http://www.renatobalestra.it

ROME FASHION WEEK: SARLI
By Eva Fydrych
Photos by Luca Sorrentino
ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Fausto Sarli - one of the most creative stylist of our times and one of the most prestigous names of Rome's high fashion trade. Born in Naples, Sarli abandoned his course of business studies to dedicate himself to fashion. He gained experience and ability at such prestigious fashion houses as Schubert and De Luca before setting up his own atelier in Naples at the end of the 50's.
Encouraged by his success he opened a second atelier in the Via Veneto in Rome. His collections were enthusiastically received wherever they were presented: the perfection of his cut and his original style won over both journalist and customers. The world's most demanding and famous women want to wear SARLI. Shy and modest by nature, Sarli does not let his succes affect him: He shuns cult status and carries on scrupulously and diligently with his work.
He continues to use the methods and techniques that typify traditional high fashion. A host of dressmakers, modellers and cutters work on his models while following the rules of the traditional school of dressmaking, and Sarli himself follows every collection through its various phases of creation. His models represent nothing less than an exercise in sartorial style and skill, which is the result of never ending stylistic research and dedication.
Sarli is not only a high fashion dressmaker, however. Different requirements and methods are the inspiration behind his prêt-à -porter collection, where handicraft must yield to mass production and abstract creativity is permeated with the needs of every day life for women who are not prepared to give up either elegance or practicality. And so we witness the birth of collections that are studied in every detail, cut and line but are at the same time both comfortable and practical. Sarli's prêt-à -porter collection is found throughout the world and strengthens the prestige and fame of this stylist who excels in the two fundamental aspects of fashion and elegance: creativity and practicality.

MOSCHINO
By Natalie Hemmati
If you had to be dressed by one designer who would it be? Who is the BEST designer in the world? As a fashion student, these are questions that I am frequently asked. To tell you the truth, there is no such designer as the BEST designer. The word “best” embodies a very vague and subjective response. In my opinion, “best” is best interpreted as influential, which instantaneously brings a multitude of designers in mind. However, if held at gun point I would say that one of the most influential designers of our time is Franco MOSCHINO.
“So what. How does that make him one of the best designers?”, the gunslinger anxiously asks. “Well”, I reply, “Moschino’s philosophy was to create stylistic collages that allowed people to be themselves. His garments represented self-expression”.
"I think fashion is something you can laugh about forever, but in the end, it's the most difficult thing to laugh at because people take it so seriously." - Franco Moschino
However, if held at gun point I would say that one of the most influential designers of our time is Franco MOSCHINO.Moschino was acclaimed for his eccentric, abstract, and avant garde collections (particularly, the Cheap and Chic collection) and ads. He was an advocate of using unconventional fabrics and prints. His designs reflected the luxurious feminine sexiness of Italian culture, yet they relayed sociopolitical messages. Moschino’s brand image quickly caught the eye of the public and was popularized into a fashion house during the 1980’s.
“So what. How does that make him one of the best designers?”, the gunslinger anxiously asks. “Well”, I reply, “Moschino’s philosophy was to create stylistic collages that allowed people to be themselves. His garments represented self-expression”.You and I, along with every other trend follower, can attest that, often times, what is trendy is not what we find comfortable, or even dare I say it, fashionable. Emphasis on the shoulders, and edgy straight lines are in style and have been for the past few years. However, a heavy set shouldered swimmer may not agree with this fashion statement. Sometimes the opposite is your breaking point. You could be the trendiest, hippest girl in the world, and suddenly you notice that there are many others just like you, who also waited in line for two hours at H & M to purchase that same Lanvin gown. Although your love for the Lanvin dress has not diminished, your individuality has.
Being a fashionista, I have so many genres and style of clothing in my wardrobe that I find it pleasing to know that when I wake up in a cheerful witty mood, I can easily put on my yellow jeans and a white silk blouse. At the same time, if I happen to wake up on the opposite side of the bed, I can easily opt for ripped jeans and my favourite Mick Jagger t-shirt. I know that just because the colour palette for Spring 2011 is vibrant hues, it does not mean I have to abide by these rules. Parallel to my music, I choose my wardrobe based upon my mood that day or night. In Franco Moschino’s own words:
“I am the chef in the sense that I follow classical recipes that time itself has invented.”
“I am the chef in the sense that I follow classical recipes that time itself has invented.”
Every great designer offers the world a different outlook to self expression. With that belief in mind, Franco Moschino designed his collections to emulate the wearer’s state of mind. He challenged conventional styles and textures. To this day, the MOSCHINO brand continues to offer dress as a form of communication.
